BACKGROUND INFORMATION

There is a wealth of course material on computers available, but most of it is in English. The big producers of computer programs are all in America, and even if they are not, they will write their handbooks in English anyway, to be able to sell them to the rest of the world.

If the manufacturer is from Eastern Asia the book might need special treatment. The language that translators usually call “Taiwan-English” doesn't come close to anything else. Sometimes you need a large bowl of fantasy, on top of your knowledge in English and in the product itself, to be able to deduce what the copywriter meant!

“PC Support” for Företagsuniversitetet, Stockholm

Företagsuniversitetet (The Corporate University) in Stockholm contacted me and asked me to write a course in technical PC management, geared for PC managers in ordinary offices. The course was well received, and is today FUN uses it in Stockholm and Gothenburg. It helps people without prior knowledge to become system managers for office PC's, and will help them become proliferate in:

Understanding terms and expressions, and being able to evaluate technical specs
Fix simple faults
Estimate need for qualified service
Defining the problem for the service representative
Installing equipment and utilise it to its fullest

The course is made up of four parts:

User Interface (behind the scenes in Windows)
The PC on the inside
The PC and the Local Area Network
The PC and the Internet

Distance tuition

Företagsuniversitetet wanted to expand its operations and offer the participants remote support between the lectures, and I was asked to create the whole system. I created a Web site and an automatic e-mail program. The participants need a push now and then, in the form of electronic letters, to keep them going at full steam, and to make them read a little extra before the next lecture. This I realised in the form of a Visual Basic program that reads the curriculum and sends customised letters to all participants. In this way, most of the work with distance tuition has been automated. More about the web site.

is also one of my many jobs. Either, I do it for my own company, or as consultant to others. Here are the subjects I sometimes have one-day courses in:

Corel Draw CorelDRAW, a wonderful vector drawing program. Basic and advanced education. Among the subjects covered: basic handling of the GUI, drawing lines and curves, editing bezier curves, colour fills - fountain and fractal, 3D effects, prepress management, such as colour models and practical colour separation work, and the right things to do when making negative film.

Corel Ventura Corel Ventura, a very advanced layout program, that beats most of its competition. Ventura is made for those who need industrial scale layouting, long publications or extremely fast typesetting of uniform publications, such as catalogues or fiction books.

NetScape Internet, and how to surf, browse, search, mail and link.

NetWare Administrator Novell NetWare, the network operating system that beats them all, Basic education, or a whole semester. Everything about passwords and network interfaces, protocols and server and client installation.

Digital Radio Digital radio, about antennas and feeder lines, and the connection to local area networks. Specifically about antenna installation and EMI protection.

My courses could be about very different things, like Internet for a whole company department, or graphic layout education for a single person on the company, for example the one responsible for the company newsletter or the product catalogue. Of course some practical help, getting the business rolling, could be included.
