Marinated herring with carrots

4 salted herring fillets,
3-4 carrots,
2 big onions,
3 tbsp of tomato paste or ketchup,
salt to your liking,
0,5-1 tsp of sugar,
ground black pepper,
frying oil.

Soak the herring fillets for some time, so they are not too salty. Halve the onion, slice it and fry it in the oil, salt and pepper. Grate the carrots coarsely. Fry the onions until they are yellow, add the carrots, salt, pepper and sugar, and stir well. When the mixture is almost finished frying, add the tomato paste and fry a little more. Allow to cool. Cut the herring fillets in ½ inch pieces and arrange in a row on a serving plate. Pour the mixture alongside.
