Memorials like this holy grass snake remind us that Lithuania was a pagan country very late in history.

Utena

Utena is Lithuania’s fourth city, but it doesn’t make too much fuss about itself. A wave of renovations wouldn’t do any harm here. The areas around are much more interesting.
  Very sturdy fire engine

On the town and all around

Some pictures from the area around Utena, among them a really groovy old Soviet ZIL fire engine, in a pastoral fire station.

  The Krokule holy spring

Krokule

A name that sounds as if taken from a book by Astrid Lindgren, but it happens to be a holy spring from medieval times, with fresh water coming out of the rock. We filled up a few bottles and tried the mud.

The organ of Vyzuonos Church, designed to look like the Church of St. Anne in Vilnius

Vyzuonos

A village close to Utena having both a gigantic grass snake for a pagan monument, and an impressive church. The snake’s name is Vyzas, symbol of a pagan God, and also the symbol of Vyzuonas village. It is 10 metres high.

  The church in Uzpaliai village

Uzpaliai

Our church-hunt goes on. We found a nicely decorated church in Uzpaliai village. Outside, by the road, is the firemen’s saint with his pail.
