Utena is Lithuania’s fourth city, but it doesn’t make too much fuss about itself. A wave
of renovations wouldn’t do any harm here. The areas around are much more interesting. |

On the town and all around
Some pictures from the area around Utena, among them a really groovy old Soviet ZIL fire engine, in a pastoral
fire station.

Krokule
A name that sounds as if taken from a book by Astrid Lindgren, but it happens to be a holy spring from medieval
times, with fresh water coming out of the rock. We filled up a few bottles and tried the mud.

Vyzuonos
A village close to Utena having both a gigantic grass snake for a pagan monument, and an impressive church.
The snake’s name is Vyzas, symbol of a pagan God, and also the symbol of Vyzuonas village. It is 10 metres high.

Uzpaliai
Our church-hunt goes on. We found a nicely decorated church in Uzpaliai village. Outside, by the road, is the
firemen’s saint with his pail.
