The Lithuanian churches can be beautiful beyond comparison, on the inside. This one is in Seredzius.

Panemune

Along the southern Lithuanian border flows river Nemunas, earlier a de facto border with Poland. The area is full of old and new castles and ancient churches. Panemune means “By he Nemunas” in Lithuanian.

Along the old border with Poland is a ridge, and on top of it are several old villages with age-old churches. The view towards the river Nemunas is nice.

A small chapel by the Veliuona church

Veliuona

Sporting an age-old church that legend has was founded by king Vytautas himself. The city also has a statue of Vytautas that was left alone by the Communists.

The church in Seredzius. It doesn’t look like much on the outside, but have a look within.

Seredzius

A little village that you just might swoosh through. But don’t miss the church. There is a story about a priest in an earlier church in the area that summoned his congregation to join the uprising against the Tsar in the 1880’s. He was dumped off in Siberia and remained there.

Panemune Castle, a romantic building from the 19:th century.

The Raudone and Panemune Castles

There is a wealth of large knight’s castles along Nemunas. And Panemune and Raudone castles are very well (somehow, anyway) preserved and splendid to view.
