My first trip to Lithuania, in 1992, went to Kaunas. The Kaunas visits have been few and
far between, but I was back in 2005, astonished that not very much had changed. Kaunas has some sort of minority
complex from having been deprived of its title as capital, a title worn during the years 1922-1939. Kaunas is nicely
situated at the conflux of the mightiest two rivers in the country, Neris and Nemunas and it could become a tourist
attraction, just like Vilnius. |

A Summer Afternoon in Town
We took a spin around town in the summer of 2005 and were astonished there was no street life at all. It was
like the whole town was on holiday - only closed cafés. It is strange that the facades look so shabby. Kaunas
has a lot of potential.

Mostly about Churches and Religious Events
We documented a wedding in the Vytautas Church. It was a splendid Swedish lad marrying a tender Lithuanian maid.
Outside the jubilating masses are waiting and the photographers seems never to be satisfied. Other churches, and
the city hall, “The White Swan“ are described.

Jurgis Kairys
The man without fear, the city’s son Jurgis Kairys, stunt flyer who dares everything, and then some. He is the
world champion in aerobatics, and flew upside down under a bridge in Kaunas in 2000. He then continued to fly under
all the ten bridges in Vilnius!
