Gediminas Beresnevicius. Background of Lithuanian SF
Diana Butkiene. Lithuanian SF and fantasy in 1985-1995
Lithuanian science fiction fell upon hard times soon after its inception. Nearly strangled by five decades of soviet occupation (1940 - 1990), it nevertheless survived and made a strong comeback since Lithuania restored its independence. The two articles below cover Lithuanian SF from its very beginning until 1995. Since then, Lithuanian SF has grown steadily. A variety of Lithuanian SF/F publications came out over the last 10 years: anthologies Sviecianti strele (The Shining Arrow) in 1996, and Geriausia Lietuvos fantastika (The Best of Lithuanian SF and Fantasy) in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2002, short story collections Dievu tyla (The Silence of the Gods) in 1997 and Zvaigzdeta Lietuva (Starry Lithuania) in 2002 by Silvestras Sinkus and Karaliavimai (Kingship) in 1999 and Zingsneliai (Little steps) in 2003 by Margarita Luzyte, fantasy novel Laumes menuo (The Month of the Lady of the Woods) in 2003 by Gintautas K.Ivanickas, sf novel Genomas 3000 (Genom 3000) in 2004 by Justinas Zilinskas, as well as a Lithuanian SF/F short story anthology in English, The Traveller.
